Introduction
The format is a one of documentary
that last for 47:45 minutes therefore they are no seasons and no episodes. The
documentary is in English with French subtitles. The people that are in the
documentary have been selected specifically for it, when being interviewed to
share their stories about their life experiences as black people. In this documentary, they are a set of
footages of street manifestations and conferences. It takes place in different
areas of America but Seattle is a part that is highlighted due to the level of
black issues there. The purpose of this documentary is educational and
informative because it highlights the issue of racism and more specifically,
how black people can be treated very badly in some countries. Black Lives
Matters is a civil rights protest movement that stop the current problem of violence against black
men and women. The
platform for broadcast for this documentary can be found on you tube, top
documentary films, on BBC World Service programmes and on imdb.
The audience targeted is young people, old people anyone
really that is interested in this subject matter and like history, and
political culture issues and want to contribute to support the black community.
Different races are trying together to fight racism in the world for years and
stop people from dying young because of a race reason. For example, in America
lots of young people are getting killed because they are just black and the
racism level
in the US black community is very high because the police will just kill them
for no specific reasons apart from being black.
The key techniques
that have been used for this documentary are based on reportage and interviews.
Reportage: the purpose
of reportage is to report and bring up news, information about a specific
topic.
Interviews: the
interview was based on a lady called Patrisse
Cullors, she is the lady that is talking about the things that was going on at
that moment of time. She was talking about what happened to her as well as other people
stories. For example she speaks about a teenage boy who got assaulted. Then a
young black man shared in an interview what happened to him when he has done
nothing; he explains what happened that night the police stopped him and
started to ask him questions when he was just going home. They pulled him over
and told him to get in the back off the car. The purpose of having this young
man talking about his experience was to show to the world how unfairly the
police treat black people. Another example is at 22:36 minutes, about a young
black man that was shot by police because when he was about to show them his
driving licence, they assumed he was armed and shot him in his arm as a result
he was bleeding heavily. Again, this is to demonstrate the injustice towards
black people.
The narrative is a story
which incorporates different stories. It has a linear structure because this
documentary has a beginning, a middle and an end. The story line is to capture
the complexities of black life and is talking how black people are being
treated and interviewed black people talking about their stories, struggles and
how they feel. It is powerful and some images are disturbing because it shows
some real reportage scenes.
The documentary is
objective because it is aiming at highlighting the assaults towards black race
and the prime goal of this programme is to inform people about this ongoing
problem and to sensitise the audience to hopefully make a difference in the
future. Also the objective is to have a history record which help to see the
changes over the years around this discrimination matter.
As a
young black person, I have chosen this documentary because I am emotionally
touched by the subject, I feel concerned about it and it triggers some anger
because I find it very discriminating and unfair.
